What can we see in Manaus? |
We are in the north of Brazil in the middle of the rain forest. We can see many trees, rivers, people. We can see the opera house. We can do boat trips, taste different foods. We have many delicious foods. (many fish, different fruits). We have different museums, a botanical garden. We can see the forest at the top. Musa Museum, the museum of Amazonia. Park/Flowers. We don’t have many monuments. We have many natural places (rivers). |
Is Manaus photogenic, because I like to take pictures? |
Maybe. We have the natural environment. If you like pictures of nature around the town. But if you look for monuments, you won’t find very much. Not like in Europe. We don’t have a castle. We are in a very simple area; |
In which state is it? |
Amzonas State. It is the biggest state. There are so many areas here which are uninhabited. We don’t have many roads. Rivers are our roads. Venice has small canals, we have very wide rivers. In some cases, we do not see the other river bank. The horizon is in the river. If there are some boat accidents, you don’t know in which way to swim to the shore. We have many fishes, some of them dangerous. River “sharks”, which can attack people. |
Do you like living in Manaus? Why? |
I was born here, I have lived all my life here. It’s home. It is where my family. I could live in any city in Brazil, rent an apartment, buy a car, but I would be alone. Manaus is not really a tourist destination. The forest and the rivers are. It lies on the junction of two important rivers, the Amazon and the Negro. It was a strategic point, The Portuguese built a fortress, there were Jesuits who settled in the area. |
Is Manaus a modern city? |
Not modern, but not old. We have a beautiful arena, we hosted some games in the world football cup. |
How many inhabitants does it have? |
About 2 million. We many districts/villages and many people come from the outside to work and the necessary infrastructure. |
Why is it called Manaus? |
The name comes from the Indian population “Manaos.” The Indians have their own language, dialect. They have different phonetics. ========== Natural resources. |
Is Manaus a good place to visit? |
Yes, because if you want to know something about Amazonia, Manaus is a good place to come. There is a modern infrastructure. |
How many days do you recommend exploring the area? |
Five days to visit the Opera House, do a boat trip, visit the forest, to visit river beaches. |
What is the best method of transport to travel around the region?  |
Driving from SĂŁo Paulo is not a good idea. Flying. Best to take taxis / Uber. There is no subway, the buses are always full, it is not pleasant to take a bus. Walking will make you sweat because of the climate. Traffic is not easy to negotiate. The streets are crowded. The problem of distances. |
When is the best season to go?  |
We have we wet season, with a lot of rain. It is not so hot then, but still humid. Jan – June. July – December is the dry season. The days are getting hotter. The best time to visit is November, the weather is milder. ‘It’s extremely hot”. 42°C // 80-90% humidity. |
