About 15 million years ago, a meteor with a diameter of more than 1 kilometre hit southern Germany at a speed of 70 000km/h at an angle of 30° from the west. This created a crater about 24 km in diameter and 500 m deep. The impact released forces that exceeded 100,000 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb. Temperatures of approximately 30.000 degrees arose where the stone evaporated and filled the crater again. It took 2000 years for the local rock temperature to cool from 600° to 100°. All life was destroyed within a radius of 100 km. Parts of the of the impact have been traced to what is now the Czech Republic.
Because the water could not drain away, an inland salt lake developed over time, whose salt content exceeded that of some seas. It was also the largest inland lake of the time.
The impact caused a tremor that is comparatively equivalent to a magnitude 8 earthquake.
And I, Walter, live here now.
This crater can be clearly seen on geological maps today. It separates the Swabian Alb and the Franconian Alb.
